Wacom, Wacoff Mr. Miyagi
In this practice shot I wanted to focus on something a little simpler than the synth I had made previously but recreate it as accurately as possible. Keeping up the trend of modelling the things around me I decided to make my Wacom graphics tablet.
Whilst not a particularly complicated looking shape, (lets face it, it's a fancy rectangle) there are some fine details and indents on the edges that weren’t necessarily a challenge to create but I tried to maintain good geometry throughout and not take any shortcuts with too many booleans.
I made the various surface materials as true to life as possible concentrating on the subtle differences between the buttons and the drawing surface. I used some surface imperfections in the shader to give the reflective surface some scuffs and smudges.
I wanted to add something different and unique in the final render so I learned a technique for generating paint strokes. It seemed appropriate for a graphics tablet. The basic setup of the paint is a very viscous fluid simulation being pushed around by an invisible “bumpy” cube. I iterated the simulation four times for each stroke to form a simple W for Wacom. I tweaked the colours to change over the stroke rather than having a solid colour as I thought that might look a little more interesting and vibrant.
In the image below I added a simple pyro simulation to make the tablet stand out and I think it works quite well as a snazzy little product shot.
As always, a tidy scene file, is a happy scene file!
